November 10: Veteran’s Day Program

By on November 5, 2020

Join us on Tuesday for our Veteran’s Day program as we honor our fellow Rotarians and guests who have served in the armed forces. Our History Committee has prepared a program that will highlight three unique perspectives of minorities in the military.

We will learn about the 28th Regiment of U.S. Colored Troops, Indiana’s only African-American Civil War regiment. In Indianapolis the leading roles in the recruitment of the Regiment was undertaken by Calvin Fletcher and Reverend Willis R. Revels, pastor of the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church. As an abolitionist and active member of the Methodist Church, Fletcher supported the Underground Railroad and joined in the efforts of the AME church to harbor fugitive slaves.

Cecelia Boler will join us to share about her great grandfather, Carter Temple Jr, a Civil War Veteran and one of Indianapolis’ first African American Police Officers. Cecelia will share her stories of her great grandfather and the impact of his service.

The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African American military aviators in the United States Armed Forces during World War II; the name also applies to the navigators, bombardiers, mechanics, instructors, crew chiefs, nurses, cooks and other support personnel. The military was racially segregated, as was much of the federal government. Reginald Duvalle III, the President of the Indiana Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen, Inc and a member of the 25th graduating class of the US Airforce Academy LCWB will share on our Indiana Tuskegee Airmen Legacy.

Join us next week in person or on Zoom as we celebrate our current veterans and learn about Indiana Minorities in the Military.
