  • March 19: Sargent Road Nature Park Volunteer Opportunity

March 19: Sargent Road Nature Park Volunteer Opportunity

On the northeast side of Indianapolis, much of the land has been developed for residential and commercial use. One particular 25-acre parcel located at Sargent Road and 82nd Street represented an opportunity to protect a rare, undeveloped, high quality, urban natural area. Mud Creek Conservancy purchased this property in April 2021 after fundraising for two years.

Now MCC is organizing volunteers to improve this site, named the Sargent Road Nature Park. On Saturday, March 19th from 9 am until 1 pm, Rotarians will work to remove invasive species from the site. We’ll get dirty. We’ll sweat. We’ll grunt. And we’ll have loads of fun.

Be a part of it! Email Norm Melzer at normmelzer@gmail.com and reserve yourself a space. Families welcome. Guests welcome. Join us!

  • March 8: Jim Merritt

    March 8: Jim Merritt

Join us Tuesday to hear from Jim Merritt, Former State Senator and President of JWM Consulting. One year ago Jim Merritt stepped away from the Indiana Senate after serving 30 years in the State House. Jim was the longest serving Caucus Chairman in Indiana history holding that position for 16 years being elected 8 times by his fellow Republican colleagues.

During his 30 years in the Senate, Merritt brought the social emergency 211 telephone hotline to Indiana. “211” has played an enormous role in the COVID pandemic. Merritt wrote the following noteworthy laws: Reforming the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Creating the Public Access Counselor, The Safe Haven law and The Lifeline law.

In response to the opioid epidemic, Merritt led Indiana’s efforts to help those suffering from addiction. Merritt played a significant role in Indiana energy issues since 1991 by serving on applicable committees and chairing the Senate’s Utility Committee 2005-2020.

Now, Jim spends time growing his consulting company, JWM Consulting and producing his “Jim Merritt’s Indiana” podcast. He will also debut a new radio show soon, “The Common Sense Hour with Jim Merritt”.  A history buff, Jim authored “Passing The Torch: Preserving Indiana’s Heritage” (Guild Press). He is married to Susan Backer, the father of three adults and grandfather to Merritt and Madison Baker.
