    April 25: Augusta Read Thomas

Join us Tuesday to hear from Augusta Read Thomas a living composer. Learn about what goes into creating a brand-new piece of music and what her new work is about. The Indianapolis Symphonic Choir commissioned and will perform her piece “Toward A Secret Sky” on April 28 &29 at the Hilbert Circle Theatre with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

The music of Augusta Read Thomas is nuanced, majestic, elegant, capricious, lyrical, and colorful — “it is boldly considered music that celebrates the sound of the instruments and reaffirms the vitality of orchestral music” (Philadelphia Inquirer).

A composer featured on a Grammy winning CD by Chanticleer and Pulitzer Prize finalist, Thomas’ impressive body of works “embodies unbridled passion and fierce poetry” (American Academy of Arts and Letters). The New Yorker magazine called her “a true virtuoso composer.” Championed by such luminaries as Barenboim, Rostropovich, Boulez, Eschenbach, Salonen, Maazel, Ozawa, and Knussen, she rose early to the top of her profession. The American Academy of Arts and Letters described Thomas as “one of the most recognizable and widely loved figures in American Music.”

She is a University Professor of Composition in Music and the College at The University of Chicago. Thomas was the longest-serving Mead Composer-in-Residence with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (1997-2006). This residency culminated in the premiere of Astral Canticle, one of two finalists for the 2007 Pulitzer Prize in Music.

Thomas won the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize, among many other coveted awards. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Thomas was named the 2016 Chicagoan of the Year.

Tickets and information about the world premier of “Toward a Secret Sky” can be found at IndyChoir.org. Use promo code GUSTY23 for 30% off tickets.  All are welcome at Rotary programs. Rotarians build planting beds for downtown preschoolers

Indianapolis Rotarians gathering on a beautiful, sunny April 15-Saturday for a fun work project building ten planting beds for children attending the Flanner House PreSchool on 2424 Dr. Martin Luther King  Jr. Street, northwest of downtown. Flanner House Minister of Agriculture Nicholas Selm and his staff prepped everything, so we could get to work early!

Rotarians Eric Miller and Erik Johnson, of the Indianapolis Rotary Environment and Beautification Committee, organized the project, and were joined in the morning work by Rotarians Luke Cathcart, Jeff Crane, Charles Meyer and his daughter, Allison, and Erin Weesner and husband, Ben. Funding was provided by the Indianapolis Rotary Foundation.

The planting beds were put together in good time, and the team took on additional work weeding the preschool’s mulch-filled playground. A good time was had by all, but especially by Flanner House preschoolers who will enjoy their new planting beds for years to come.

The Indianapolis Rotary Club has done a number of projects for Flanner House over the years.
