    December 8, Secretary of State Connie Lawson

    Connie Lawson is Indiana’s 61st Secretary of State. A tireless advocate for improving elections in Indiana, increasing Indiana’s financial literacy and protecting Indiana investors, Secretary Lawson is also directing substantial innovation and leveraging cutting edge technology to improve how businesses interact with government which is what she will discuss at Rotary on Tuesday.

    Secretary Lawson will offer Rotary members a review of Indiana’s new crowdfunding rules, which give entrepreneurs an opportunity to learn about new ways to raise capital and give investors an opportunity to learn about new ways to invest in Indiana. She will also talk about her office’s Business One-Stop project, which will allow Hoosier business owners to connect to all of state government from one portal.  Finally, she will discuss Benefit Corporations, a new way to structure a business with a defined social or environmental purpose.

    Secretary Lawson lends her substantial leadership experience to help great organizations.  She is a regional vice president of the National Association of Secretaries of State, an honorary governor of the Richard G. Lugar Excellence in Public Service Series, the honorary chairwoman of the Lupus Foundation of Indiana, and a co-chair of the Hendricks County United Way to name just a few.

    Prior to serving as Secretary of State, Lawson served in the Indiana Senate for sixteen years, where she accomplished significant legislative success. Respected across the aisle, she quickly earned the admiration of her colleagues and made history in 2006 when she was selected as the first woman to serve as Majority Floor Leader in the Indiana Senate.

His successor will be Ken File, highly successful Vice President, Advancement, Goodwill Industries of Central Indiana. The announcement was made by Dr. Jim Dalton, Damar Services President and CEO. Rick, Ken, and Jim are all members of the Rotary Club of Indianapolis.

    The Indianapolis Rotary Foundation has awarded $85,000 in Community Grants to Indianapolis nonprofits for 2015-16. Recipients include Recycle Force, Jewish Family Services, The Mid North Food Pantry and the Assistance League of Indianapolis.     December 1, Mayor Gregory Ballard

    Gregory A. Ballard is the Republican mayor of Indianapolis and will complete his second term at the end of December. On Tuesday, November 6, 2007, he defeated incumbent Democratic Mayor Bart Peterson and it was described as one of the biggest upsets in the political history of Indiana. Ballard was re-elected in November 2011 and has experienced a rich legacy of improving Indianapolis, including creating an administration and city culture that embraces energy savings, including the massive expansion of bike lanes and modifying the city fleet of vehicles. Join us as we honor his tenure as mayor and thank him for service.

    2015 Indianapolis Rotary Foundation Annual Report

    The Rotary Foundation of Indianapolis is a private, stand-alone corporation that serves as the primary community charitable arm of the Rotary Club of Indianapolis. Annual contributions to the Foundation are added to an eternal endowment fund and allocated income from that fund is utilized to support grants for charitable and educational purposes, primarily in the Indianapolis and Central Indiana areas.   • November 24, Allison Melangton, Senior Vice President, Hulman Motorsports Corporation

    Allison Melangton joined Hulman Motorsports Corporation as Senior Vice President on November 1, 2014 and is responsible for overall production of major events at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, including those during the Month of May, the Indianapolis 500, the Brickyard 400, and Verizon INDYCAR Series special events, such as the pre-season kickoff and post-season celebration parties.

    Melangton served on the Executive Leadership team of Indiana Sports Corp for twenty years, serving the last two years as President from September 1, 2012 until October of 2014.  Four of those years were serving as CEO and president of the 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee from 2008 through 2012.

    Widely regarded as the most engaging and successfully organized Super Bowl in history, Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis featured the Super Bowl Village, which drew more than 1.1 million people to downtown Indianapolis; $154 million of investment in the city’s Near Eastside through the Legacy Project; more than 8,000 volunteers serving in a variety of roles; and community, youth and green initiatives that impacted hundreds of thousands of individuals.

    Thank you Rotarians! The Power of a Dollar

    Over the month of November Rotarians brought boxes and bags of rice to our November Rotary luncheons as we worked to fill the Second Helpings pantry! By observing the “Power of a Dollar” (the cost of a box of rice), we collected 209 lbs of food! Second Helpings uses 105 lbs of rice each week as part of the 20,000 meals prepared! The Rotary effort will provide rice for 2 weeks of meals, nearly 80 organizations! Almost half of the organizations are children at Boys and Girls club, low income day care centers and after school programs. Also served are Wheeler Mission, Julian Center, Damien Center, other homeless shelters, senior centers or community gatherings. Second Helpings is a local nonprofit that prepares 4,000 meals per day for local families and local nonprofits to serve their clients.

    Jim Graham, Past District Governor of District 6560, will discuss the story of former Indy club member James Whitcomb Riley, what started Riley Children’s Hospital, Rotary’s connection to Polio pediatric care in Indianapolis and the story of the polio effort on going in Afghanistan and the Rotary Foundation’s assistance.  His presentation will provide a fascinating back story for new members as well as a riveting update on Polio efforts for our more established members.

    Brownsburg Rotarian, Jim Graham served as Past District Gov, 2007-2008, is a member of the Alumni/Alumni Development Team, a Polio Plus Advisor and sits on the Council of Past District Governors
