    Join us on Tuesday at Ivy Tech Culinary and Conference Center or on Zoom to hear from Karyn Smitson. Karyn is a leader who is passionate about bringing young talent to Indianapolis and then mentoring and developing these early career professionals.

    Six years ago in spring 2015, Karyn joined Orr Fellowship as Executive Director – it’s very first hire. She has overall strategic and operational responsibility for the Fellowship’s members, programs, partner companies, schools, and other stakeholders. 

    Orr Fellowship is a nonprofit dedicated to helping exceptional, high-achieving college seniors land full-time jobs in the Indy area. Orr provides two years of programming and networking opportunities by night, as Fellows devote themselves to their careers at dynamic, forward-thinking, entrepreneurial-spirited companies of all types and sizes by day. There are currently about 120 Fellows working at 72 local partner companies with 81 new Fellows arriving in a few weeks.

    Born in Columbus, Indiana and a proud IU Hoosier, Karyn’s past experience includes Director of Market Development at the Indianapolis Star, Director of Marketing and Public Relations at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, and a couple stints at ad agencies. She lives in Carmel with her husband and youngest of three sons.

    Join us on Tuesday at Ivy Tech Culinary and Conference Center or on Zoom to hear from Seth Morales. Seth succeeded his father as CEO of Morales Group Staffing in 2020, beginning the second generation of family leadership. Founded in 2003 as a way to bridge resources and opportunities to the Hispanic community, Morales Group Staffing has brought innovations to the staffing industry, including a business model rooted in workforce development meant to advance associates, as well as promotion of diversity in the workplace.

    Under the family’s leadership, the organization prospered with rapid growth to over 4,000 internal and external team members and 11 offices across five states. Morales Group consistently receives industry recognition including Best Places to Work in Indiana by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce — earning the title six times to date. 

    Seth earned his degree at Purdue University, where he was a three-year starter and honorary captain of the Big Ten Championship Football team, and his MBA at the University of Notre Dame. In addition to his key role at Morales Group, Seth serves on the boards of St. Vincent Health System, YPO, TrueU and Indiana Latino Institute.

    May 11: Goodwill’s Nurse-Family Partnership

    Join us on Tuesday at Ivy Tech Culinary and Conference Center or on Zoom to hear from Lynn Baldwin the Director of Operations for Goodwill’s Nurse-Family Partnership. The Nurse-Family Partnership empowers vulnerable first-time moms to transform their lives and create better futures for themselves and their babies. The Nurse-Family Partnership works by having specially trained nurses regularly visit young, first-time moms-to-be, starting early in the pregnancy and continuing through the child’s second birthday. Lynn will share with us about the organization and then we will participate in a club service project of packing tote bags filled with baby essentials for their new moms. This project is funded by the Indianapolis Rotary Foundation and organized by the Community Service Committee.

    Join us on Tuesday at Ivy Tech Culinary and Conference Center or on Zoom to hear from William (Bill) Browne, Jr., FAIA, LEED AP. Bill is the president and founding principal of RATIO Design. Since establishing RATIO almost 40 years ago, Bill has focused his career on advancing both the quality of design and delivery of professional services. Through the seamless integration of architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, urban design and historic preservation, the firm’s projects have served as catalysts for revitalization in numerous and diverse communities across the United States and overseas. 

    Bill has led the expansion of the firm, which now has studios located in Indianapolis, Chicago, Denver, Raleigh, and Champaign, allowing RATIO to establish a national presence and work internationally in Korea, Malaysia, and China.

    Bill is an active member of the Indianapolis community, currently serving as chair of the Downtown Indy Board, chair of the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites Board, and president of the Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission. He  also serves on the White River State Park Commission, the Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee, and the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site Advisory Board. 

    In 2009, Bill was named a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, and in 2014 a Legend in Design by the Interior Design Coalition.

    Bill received his Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and his Master of Arts in Architecture from the University of Florida. He is NCARB (National Council of Architectural Registration Boards) Certified and a registered architect in over 25 states.

    April 27: Dr. Adrian Gardner

    Join us on Tuesday at Ivy Tech Culinary and Conference Center or on Zoom to hear from Dr. Adrian Gardner. Dr. Gardner is the Associate Dean for Global Health and Director of the IU Center for Global Health and the Executive Director of AMPATH (Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare) Consortium. 

    Dr. Gardner attended the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. He first traveled to Kenya as a medical student in 2001 during the time that the AMPATH HIV program was first being conceived by IU School of Medicine physician Joe Mamlin. This experience, along with clinical experience in the Rhode Island TB clinic, drove his interest in HIV and tuberculosis and had a huge impact on his life and career plans. He sought every opportunity to return to Kenya and served as the AMPATH Team Leader in 2006-07. Dr. Gardner then returned to Boston to complete a fellowship in infectious diseases at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He earned a master of public health from Harvard School of Public Health.

    Dr. Gardner joined Indiana University School of Medicine in 2012 as the executive field director of  AMPATH and was based full time in Eldoret, Kenya during his seven years in this role. During this time he worked closely with Kenyan program leadership to make strategic investments and policy decisions while also providing service to inpatients on the medical wards at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital and outpatients in the HIV clinics and HIV resistance clinics. When in Indianapolis, he cared for patients at Eskenazi Hospital.

    During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Gardner is the director of contact tracing for the IU Medical Response Team.

    April 20: Kevin Hardie

    Join us on Tuesday at Ivy Tech Culinary and Conference Center or on Zoom to hear from Kevin Hardie the Executive Director of the Friends of the White River (FOWR). A founding member of FOWR, Hardie has been active with the organization since its inception in 1985.

    Hardie has a 30-plus-year history of involvement with ongoing efforts that raise awareness about the resource’s value.

    His professional background is in the area of communications and community relations, with a career that includes work as a reporter and city editor for a daily newspaper, and as the public relations manager for WFYI, the local PBS station. A graduate of Purdue University, he and his wife were married on the banks of White River. They live near the river’s confluence with Williams Creek.

    April 13: Darryl Lockett

    Join us on Tuesday at Ivy Tech Culinary and Conference Center or on Zoom to hear from Darryl Lockett the Executive Director of The Kennedy King Memorial Initiative (KKMI), a nonprofit organization dedicated to build on the historical events of April 4, 1968, to raise awareness, provoke thought and inspire action to eliminate division and injustice.

    Before joining KKMI as its first full time Executive Director in January 2020, Lockett was the advisor to the president of AARP Foundation in Washington D.C. Focused upon tackling senior poverty and helping vulnerable older adults build economic opportunity and social connectedness, he developed and implemented the Foundation’s partnership-focused growth plan, managed external relations and strategic positioning and bolstered the organization’s efforts in strategic grantmaking, innovation, and business operations.

    In previous positions, Lockett has served as a research and policy fellow at the Washington Development Industry Council (WDIC), project coordinator for Greenberg Quinlan Rosner (GQR) Research and Democracy Corps and development director for the National Diversity Council.

    Passionate about increasing equity, opportunity and access for vulnerable and historically underresourced communities, Lockett has a wealth of experience in nonprofit management, political and philanthropic strategy, and diversity, equity and inclusion advocacy. Additionally, he has provided counsel in shared value and collective impact frameworks for public-private partnerships and human centered design and agile innovation principles to tech startups addressing issues of public health.

    Lockett has volunteered and served on civic boards in Washington, DC, Houston, TX, and Philadelphia, PA, and currently serves as the Chair of the Steering Committee of the Central Indiana Racial Equity Fund (CIREF) in Indianapolis. CIREF supports organizations seeking to improve interactions between the Black community and local police in Indianapolis; address the disproportionate number of Black youth in the juvenile and criminal justice system by providing positive alternatives for education and employment; and increase employment, health and wealth opportunities for communities of color.

    Lockett holds an undergraduate degree from Howard University and has completed graduate studies in an MA/MBA dual degree program at John Hopkins University’s Carey Business School and Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. He and his wife Dr. Amanda Washington Lockett are the proud parents of two amazing children, Landon and Olivia.
