| Join us Tuesday to hear from James M. Johnson the Chief Executive Officer of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Johnson began his tenure in Indianapolis on April 30, 2018. In his role at the ISO, he is tasked with advancing the ISO’s mission by establishing the organization’s strategic plan and marshalling the human and financial capital to achieve success. With an annual budget of more than $27 million, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra presents more than 180 performances each year. From its home at Hilbert Circle Theatre and its residency at Conner Prairie, the ISO reaches nearly 300,000 community members annually, including nearly 50,000 students. Prior to accepting the position in Indianapolis, Johnson served as President and Chief Executive Officer at the Omaha Symphony for seven years. Before his appointment in Omaha in 2011, Johnson served as the Chief Executive Officer of The New York Pops, and held operations positions at the Orchestra of St. Luke’s and Martha Graham Dance Company. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Pacific Lutheran University, and a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Arts in Arts Administration from Southern Methodist University. Johnson has served as chair of the League of American Orchestras managers’ committee, president of Arts Omaha, and was a recipient of the 2018 Dick and Mary Holland Leadership Award from the Omaha Symphony. January 23: Dr. David Crandall
Join us Tuesday to hear from Dr. David Crandall the Luddy Professor of Computer Science, inaugural Director of the Luddy Artificial Intelligence Center and Director of Machine Learning at Indiana University. Dr. Crandall received his Ph.D. in computer science from Cornell University in 2008 and the M.S. and B.S. degrees in computer science and engineering from the Pennsylvania State University, University Park, in 2001. He worked as a postdoctoral associate at Cornell from 2008-2010, and as a research scientist at Eastman Kodak Company from 2001-2003. Dr. Crandall’s main research interest is computer vision, the area of computer science that tries to design algorithms that can “see”. He is particularly interested in visual object recognition and scene understanding.

February 16: NBA Cares All-Star Day of Service Volunteer Opportunity
Next month the NBA All-Star 2024 will take place in Indianapolis and – as we do in Indy – we plan to make it so much more than a game. The Rotary Club of Indianapolis will be supporting the NBA and Indiana Pacers for their first ever 24-hour NBA Cares All-Star Day of Service to fight hunger on our own home court. The goal for this All-Star Day of Service is to bring together 6,000 volunteers to pack ONE MILLION meals which will be distributed to food pantries throughout the state of Indiana.
So how can you help?
We are partnering with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and INDYCAR and invite you to join us for an exclusive VIP meal packing shift featuring NTT INDYCAR SERIES drivers and other special guests. The goal is to have 720 volunteers join us for this high-energy shift taking place at Lucas Oil Stadium on Friday, February 16 from 7:30-9:30 a.m. Volunteers will not only be supporting a good cause and taking part in All-Star festivities, they’ll also be gathering exactly 100 days from the next Indy 500.

January 16: Judge Evan Goodman
Join us Tuesday to hear from Judge Evan Goodman. Judge Goodman served as a deputy Prosecutor, a Probate Court Commissioner and practiced law for 11 years. He came from the firm of Mantel, Mantel, and Goodman, before being appointed the first judge of a Mental Health Court in America in 1982. In 1989 he also became the first judge in Indiana to specialize in Domestic Violence cases.
Governor Bayh appointed him to be Chief Judge of the Marion County Municipal Courts. Evan was elected to the Superior Court Bench in 2000.
He has appeared on Good Morning America and on National Public Radio. He has been a presenter at national conferences on various legal subjects, including drunk driving with C. Everett Koop, U. S. Surgeon General, moderated by Jerry Springer.
In August 1963, Evan hitchhiked to Washington, D. C. for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Judge Goodman will share his experience of attending the March on Washington and hearing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. deliver his “I Have a Dream” speech.

January 9: Dr. Morton Marcus
Join us Tuesday to hear from Dr. Morton Marcus. Dr. Marcus taught economics for the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University and is the former Director of the Indiana Business Research Center. He has taught urban, micro and macro economics and researches changes in the economy and population of the Midwest and the entire nation.
Dr. Marcus is a consultant to local economic development agencies and financial institutions on strategic planning. From 1979 to 2003 he was the Governor’s liaison to the U.S. Bureau of the Census. He has also been an advisor on matters of public policy to six Indiana governors. He is a published author and columnist in numerous newspapers.
Dr. Marcus received a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Roosevelt University, a Master’s degree in Economics from Washington University, and a Doctorate in Economics from the University California, Los Angeles.
