Renovated Rotary Building dedicated on IU School of Medicine campus

One of the oldest buildings on the Indiana University School of Medicine campus has been both transformed and preserved with a $10 million renovation, and university leaders will gather Friday afternoon for a dedication of the newly restored historic Rotary Building. At the north end of Ball Gardens on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus between Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health and the Sidney and Lois Eskenzai Hospital, the Rotary Building dates to 1931, when much of the current campus did not yet exist.

The building served initially as a children’s convalescent unit associated with Riley Hospital, which had opened in 1924. Members of Rotary clubs across Indiana raised $276,000 to pay for the new facility.

The Rotary Building has served a variety of purposes over the decades, most recently as the home of the IU School of Medicine’s Department of Ophthalmology until the opening of the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Eye Institute in 2011.

The subsequent $10 million renovation project was overseen by Schmidt Associates, working with IU architects and facility planners. The goal was to restore the building’s original beauty while modernizing the structure to meet the needs of the future.

The renovation has produced 40,000 gross square feet of office and academic space, now housing the IU-Kenya Partnership, the Division of Gastroenterology/Hepatology, the Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and offices of the Department of Surgery.

Led by IU President Michael A. McRobbie, IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz and IU School of Medicine Dean Jay L. Hess, the dedication program will begin at 1 p.m. Friday in the Ruth Lilly Learning Center Auditorium of the Riley Hospital Outpatient Center.

Annie Burnett with the “The Amazing Adventures of the Princesses from Planet STEM”

Annie BurnettAnnie Burnett (daughter of Rotary Club of Indianapolis President, Matt Burnett) with the book The Amazing Adventures of the Princesses from Planet STEM, written by our speaker for the July 29, 2014 program, Dr. Erin Albert.

Dr. Erin Albert is an entrepreneur, writer, pharmacist, attorney, and associate professor. She is the founder of two companies (Pharm, LLC and Yuspie, LLC), and currently is the Director of Continuing Education & Preceptor Development, and Director of the Ribordy Center for Community Practice Pharmacy at Butler University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.

Erin has developed and written several books on pharmacy practice, entrepreneurship, law, regional community development for central Indiana, and most recently, a children’s book on STEM. After launching a successful Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign in the fall of 2013, Dr. Albert donated 440 copies of her new STEM children’s book, The Amazing Adventures of the Princesses from Planet STEM to the Indiana State Public Library System. Her books have been featured in The Huffington Post, Entrepreneur, Forbes, and The New York Times. She blogs at her website, erinalbert.com.

A native Hoosier, she attended Butler University, Concordia University Wisconsin for her MBA, Shenandoah University for her doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) degree, and the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law for her JD.

The title of her presentation for the July 29 program: Why We Should All Be STEAMED About Education in Indiana.
STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education is in the media everywhere. It has been estimated Indiana alone will have 123,000 STEM jobs available in 2018. However, is the emphasis on STEM education enough to set Indiana apart from the rest of the global workforce? Sixty five percent of grade school children today may have jobs that don’t even yet exist. In this presentation, Dr. Albert will argue and advocate not only for STEM education in Indiana, but STEAMED education, which integrates the arts, entrepreneurship and design thinking into the STEM curriculum, which will better prepare the future Indiana workforce.

  • Better Know a Member – Andrea Geiger

Better Know a Member – Andrea Geiger

geigerDescribe your profession and what is your favorite part of it?
My career is hands down the most fun and exciting thing that I think I could ever do! I have the privilege of taking a local business’ objectives and figure out ways to make people to DO or BELIEVE something. The ultimate goal is to create an integrated marketing campaign utilizing multiple platforms. My favorite part is the customization to each client’s specific needs and coordinating experiences through exclusive lifestyle programs. We are the media partners for the Indianapolis Colts, the Indiana Pacers, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. We produce the downtown 4th of July Fireworks that blast off of the Regions Tower, we have music artists, athletes, comedians and celebrities through the building frequently.

What do you like to do when you are not working?
I have a six pound yorkie named Mack and a one hundred pound golden/lab mix named Baxter. We like to go for walks. I also enjoy gardening and must say this weather is REALLY helping out my tomatoes! I enjoy a variety of live music, craft beer festivals and events around town. I have a wonderful group of close friends and we travel to Nashville or load up the kayaks for a weekend on the river! However, hands down, my favorite thing to do – I’m a Colt’s Season ticket holder. My mother shares the other seat. Sunday’s are our FUNdays and I love spending time with her.

What is the most satisfying benefit you get from being a Rotarian?
The most satisfying benefit from being a Rotarian is the feeling of community. I absolutely adore Indianapolis and as a Rotarian, I am constantly learning about ways that we can make this a better community. My fellow Rotarians have all been very friendly and welcoming. I have recently taken over the chair of the Business Networking committee and I’m thrilled to work with President Matt, Susie and Greg on ways that we can make this aspect of our club better!

    Tell us about your family.
If you’ve ever been to Madison, Indiana and seen the electric plant smoke stacks on the Ohio River, you have seen part of my family’s past. My Great Grandfather farmed the land the electric plant sits on prior to it’s construction. After he “sold” the land to the government, he relocated the family to Columbus, Indiana. His daughter, my grandmother, was the assistant of the school district for BSCS for years and now resides in the Lutheran Home in Seymour, Indiana. My grandfather worked at Irwin Union bank until he retired. He passed two years ago. He taught me the importance of fiscal responsibly and how to garden. He would be proud to see how far my garden has come this year! My father is a Disabled American Veteran of the Vietnam War and worked for Force Construction in Columbus, Indiana until he retired. My mother started out working on a factory line a t Aisin U.S.A. when I was five years old. Two months ago, she retired from her position as Executive Vice President of Human Resources. My family has taught me the value of hard work and how to utilize your own resources.

Share one thing people do not know about you.
I have been a bridesmaid in 21 weddings and my 22nd wedding is on August 8th!

Share some “words to live by,” or your favorite quote.
PERSISTENCE. Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; noting is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone will bring success.

What you be doing if you were not in your present profession, today?
I would be a nurse or a pediatrician. From the time I was a little girl, I had always wanted to be a “kid” doctor. When I became the Photo Editor of the Columbus North Triangle Newspaper, I knew that journalism of some sort was my passion.

Outside of Rotary, please share other interesting civic or community involvement of which you are a part.
I work actively with the American Heart Association. I help with the production of Indy Has Heart, the Red Dress Dash and the Heart of Gold Ball. I am on the events committee for Junior Achievement. I also try to look for ways to help out Susan G. Komen and a new group called Cocktails and Causes.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?
Living somewhere like Butler Tarkington, in a rehabbed house.. and who knows.. maybe a kid or two? MAYBE! 🙂

August 8, Dr. Angelique Walker-Smith, to be Honored

angeliqueRotary Club of Indianapolis member since 1995, Dr. Angelique Walker-Smith will be honored at a special Thanksgiving Celebration and Dinner on August 8, 2014. The celebration will take place at Light of the World Christian Church.  Tickets and sponsorships can be purchased at http://www.indyfaith.org/_forms/view/20906. Download the invitation here.

(Excerpt from The Indianapolis Recorder, March 24, 2011)

As a senior in high school, Angelique Walker wanted to get as far away from Cedarville and Springfield, Ohio, as she could manage. She went away to college at Kent State University, located 162 miles across the state.

It was not that the preacher’s kid was trying to ditch her beloved parents, Rev. Roosevelt and Geneva Walker, but the teenager was ready to make her own mark.

Having given her life to Christ at age 9, Walker started to feel a calling to the ministry while she was an undergraduate student at Kent State, but did not know that calling was toward the pulpit. Still, after graduating she was convinced that she should pursue graduate study at Yale University Divinity School, (YDS) where she earned a master’s of divinity degree. This also allowed her to join her future husband at Yale, R. Drew Smith, whom she met at Blessed Hope Baptist Church in Indianapolis as a youth during a visit from her home church in Springfield.
