    Rotary-Riley Annual Holiday Party A Huge Success

    Riley ChildYes, the snow outside was frightful, but the smiles and children indoors where delightful. And of course several hardy Rotarians can accomplish much with the reminder of “service above self.”

    Melissa Sexton, (Riley) and her elves had all the ornament kits ready to go, the live band was tuning up and about a dozen Rotarians and family members gathered to host our annual ornament making party for the kids and their families at the Riley Children’s Hospital, Thursday December 5. Our own Jessica Bex was our organizer and beautiful cheerleader.

    As snow and sleet blew around outside we had the privilege of helping precious children, their families and many of their caregivers create ornaments for a beautifully lighted tree waiting to be decorated.

    5:31 meet-and-greets are our most popular event get-togethers. They are a fun way to get to know folks outside of our regular Tuesday programs. We always meet at a new location somewhere in the city and it is never dull! Want to be added to the mailing list? Sign-up here! (just below the “Contact Us” form).

    Our next 5:31 will be December 4 at Rusty Bucket (1130 W. 86th St.). Then, mark your calendars for January 8, February 5 and March 5. Locations to be announced and we always welcome suggestions and input. As President Scott says, this is the Year of the Member so if you have thought about the 5:31 Club or any other social activity you’d like to see us plan, we’d love to hear from you!

    September 28, Help us Pedal For Peace

    Join Team Rotary on  Saturday, September 28, 2013. 3-7 p.m. for this year’s Pedal for Peace.

    The event will take place at Major Taylor Velodrome, a world-class bike racing facility that was built for the Pan Am Games 3649 Cold Spring Rd.

    Tim Dudley and Lisa JeffOur team is “Indy Rotary” and is open to all Rotarians, families and friends.  Last year we had about 15 bikers who had a wonderful time taking turns riding the track, visiting and enjoying food and fun.

    Donations from team participants will provide a school lunch for over 400 children for an entire year in Kenya AND help leading pantries procure 75 tons of food for hungry Indianapolis area residents. The recipients of the lunch would not be in school at all without the lunch so the gift is so much more than just food for these children.

    How do you get involved?

    Go to “Register to ride.”

    Our goal is for each rider to raise at least $100 for the cause – donations can be made thru the website or brought the day of the event.

  • Rotary Golf’s “Fun Day,” September 19

    Rotary Golf’s “Fun Day” outing is at the famed Broadmoor Country Club (2155 Kessler Blvd W Dr  Indianapolis, IN 46228) on Thursday, 9/19/13. Bankers Handicap will be the format and tee times will be assigned starting at 1:45 pm. There will be the Etica Group putting contest run by Dr. Divot (Ron Baker) with cash prizes that will start at 1:30 pm. There will also be the litany of contests including: “shortest drive,” “closest to the near side of the creek in two,” “highest gross,” “closest to the pin in two,” “longest drive,” etc.

    Ruth’s Chris Steak House (Ramona Adams) will be providing food. Rumor has it Somerset CPA’s (Debbie Hyde) will be providing “Sneaky Pete’s” again; come and play to verify!

    There are only 32 slots so don’t delay…please make your check out for $75 payable to the “Rotary Club of Indianapolis” and mail it to Dave Leonards at 3612 N. Washington Blvd., Indianapolis, IN 46205-3592 today or give it to me at Rotary Golf on Mondays or at Rotary on Tuesdays.

    We are still soliciting sponsors for this outing. Already signed up are: the Etica Group (Ron Baker) as the Putting Contest Sponsor, One America (Dan Shelly), Williams Randall Markering (Charlie Williams), PNC (Joe Gaafar), Harrison College (Ken Konesco), Economy Plumbing (John Strong), Blue & Company (Jeff Moffatt) and International Entertainment Bureau (David Leonards). We have plenty of room for more; $75 for a Platinum Sponsor; $50 for a Gold Sponsor; $40 for a Silver Sponsor; $25 for a Bronze Sponsor or any prizes or golf goodies qualifies. Of course, we will accept any beer and/or food sponsor too.

    Rotary Golf continues its weekly play this Monday, 8/12/13, at River Glen just North of 116th off Allisonville Road. Be sure to tell them in the Clubhouse that you are with Rotary to get the discount – $26 for riders or $20 if you want to walk.

    Come down to the tee at 3:07 pm and get paired up. If you are running a little late, that is OK; but please try to be there by 3:30 pm. We socialize in the Clubhouse after the 1st nine which counts for League play (we have a handicapped League so you don’t have to be good), collect the scores, and then, those that want to, play the back nine for no additional charge. Guests (and they do not have to be Rotarians) are welcome. Furthermore, you don’t have to play every week; come when you can.

    Remember, “We always finish at Rotary Golf!”

    Annual 2013 Rotary Verses Kiwanis Softball

    The summer solstice provided the longest day of the year and also the most innings in a Rotary vs. Kiwanis softball game on Friday night, June 21, 2013.

    Showcased as the “grudge match” because of a tie game in 2012, the 2013 softball game looked like it may end in another tie. However, in the top of the 6th inning the offense of the Kiwanis was a bit too much for Rotary as a single blast scored the only run ending the game with a Kiwanis victory: Kiwanis 1 – Rotary 0.

    Not to be forgotten however, was a wonderful time had by all the players (including Kiwanis) and cheerleaders from both clubs. Both clubs sold nearly 200 tickets to the game and on a beautiful Friday night in Indianapolis enjoyed an Indians game and Friday Night Fireworks after the game.

  • Fun at Rotary Golf

    Rotary Golf continues back at River Glen this Monday, 6/14/10 which is Flag Day,. Wear some “red, white, and/or blue”. Please note that League Play at River Glen will run thru Monday August 23, 2010; however, we are not playing on Monday, July 5, 2010. Furthermore, you do not have to play every week; just play when you can. Also, we welcome your guests. The cost is the same as last year; $25 with carts or $19 for walkers. League play is handicapped plus is only nine holes; however, you may play the entire eighteen at no additional cost. Just pay at the Clubhouse before you play; tell them that you are with Rotary to get the discounted rate.. There will be a pause after nine to collect scores and socialize. Late golfers may join us then around 5:30 pm and play nine afterwards.

    To those of you that didn’t join us last Monday at our Brickyard Crossing outing, you missed out because we had a great day for golf and all had a good time. Every golfer received a logo ball, a logo green’s marker, a towel, and tees. While nobody got a hole in one, Ralph Taylor was our “Bankers Handicap” Champion with a “low net” of 62; congratulations Ralph. Ask him how he chipped it in on the 165 yard par three hole # 4 from the almost 90 degree embankment on the right side of the hole. There were two “official” witnesses to see this great shot on the hole. Jeff Lake and Jim Pauloski, as it was our “hole in one” $20,000.oo prize hole. Tied for second low net with 66’s was Evan Goodman and Ken Young. We needed to use two holes to get the tie breaker and Evan Goodman won. Fourth low net was Kirby Durham at 67. Dan Shelley wasn’t there to defend his “shortest drive” and Kirby Durham obliged. There also was a real battle for highest gross; however, Tom Fisher claimed the prize this time J It should also be noted that Jim Boots Wife, Susan, got the longest drive on Hole # 15; way to go Susan! Other contest prize winners were Todd Lugar, Jerry Clifford, Dick Amick, Ken Konesco, and Steve Ivy. Thanks again to Tim Weiland of the Marion Rotary Club (Stanley Steemer) and our own Kirby Durham (First Financial Bank) for being our sponsors. Thanks to our witnesses (they said that they could be bribed); Jim Bethel, our starter for the day; and all 28 of you who played as we couldn’t have done it without you.

    Monday, August 23, 2010, is slated to be our “fun day and awards” event; please mark your calendars as you won’t want to miss it. It will again be a “bankers handicap” event plus there will be prizes on almost every hole. More to follow in the future. If you or your company wants to be a sponsor for the day, please contact me. We accept almost anything. Of course, cash is welcome also.
