Rotarian Kim Brand Promotes interest in technology and engineering among students

Business owner Kim Brand posed a question to a crowd of mostly elderly listeners.

“They all laughed when I said, ‘How many of you took shop classes?’ They all raised their hands,” Brand said. “I said, ‘How many of you have grandkids who are in shop classes?’ Nobody raised their hands. Nobody. We’ve abandoned what I think is a sort of deep, DNA capacity to tinker.”

Brand’s Indianapolis-based company, 3D Parts Manufacturing, responded to a lack of interest in engineering and manufacturing by working with Indianapolis area teachers to incorporate 3D printers into classroom lessons as a way to promote interest in technology and engineering among students.

  • 2013 – 2014 Rotary Bowling Season Wrap-Up Report

The 2013-2014 Bowling Season finished up April 29th with our annual banquet at Maple Creek Country Club, statistics, prizes and fellowship! Another warm and wonderful get together. Thank you Mac Fehsenfeld for the opportunity! While are numbers are down our spirits are good. We dealt with hand and shoulder surgeries this year but all have come back stronger! Just so you know in “the day” the bowling league was 12 teams of 5 and 4 women’s teams (wives). And to be guaranteed a place on the Rotary Board you had to be on the bowling League! While many of the players only bowl in our league on Tuesday nights there are several who have made it more than a hobby! In the Senior Masters League, Andy Carr, led his team to the overall championship with a 718!! We also all saw Andy bowl a 298 this past Spring (300 is perfect – 12 Strikes!). Please believe me when I say we are not all that good, my average is only 141. Jennifer Hobbs

Please come join us for fun at Woodland Bowl any Tuesday night, September -April! WE NEED YOU!!!!

  • The day went to the dogs, but that’s a good thing

On a beautiful spring day this last Saturday (April 26, 2014), volunteers and family members from the Rotary Club of Indianapolis, attended Mutt Strut 2014, a fund raiser for the Humane Society of Indianapolis.  Held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the track was cleared of all cars for the dogs and owners to amble the historic raceway.  On this beautiful 70 degree day, all versions of dogs could be seen from small to large from shorthair to bushy from cute and cuddly to large and athletic as well as all types in between.   Here to raise funds for the homeless animals that find their way to the Humane Society, the group had a great time.  The day was a great success and most likely was the best attended over the nearly two decade long history of the event.  Our own Rotarian, John Aleshire, CEO of Indy Humane, was Emcee for the day.  Thanks to Paul St. Angelo, Jenny Butler and Joe Gaafar for bring their families out to represent Rotary in this worthy event and showing that we have a heart for our four legged friends.  It is certainly one way our club is building goodwill and better friendships in our community.
