March 8: Jim Merritt
By Rotary Club of Indianapolis on March 3, 2022
Join us Tuesday to hear from Jim Merritt, Former State Senator and President of JWM Consulting. One year ago Jim Merritt stepped away from the Indiana Senate after serving 30 years in the State House. Jim was the longest serving Caucus Chairman in Indiana history holding that position for 16 years being elected 8 times by his fellow Republican colleagues. During his 30 years in the Senate, Merritt brought the social emergency 211 telephone hotline to Indiana. “211” has played an enormous role in the COVID pandemic. Merritt wrote the following noteworthy laws: Reforming the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Creating the Public Access Counselor, The Safe Haven law and The Lifeline law. In response to the opioid epidemic, Merritt led Indiana’s efforts to help those suffering from addiction. Merritt played a significant role in Indiana energy issues since 1991 by serving on applicable committees and chairing the Senate’s Utility Committee 2005-2020. Now, Jim spends time growing his consulting company, JWM Consulting and producing his “Jim Merritt’s Indiana” podcast. He will also debut a new radio show soon, “The Common Sense Hour with Jim Merritt”. A history buff, Jim authored “Passing The Torch: Preserving Indiana’s Heritage” (Guild Press). He is married to Susan Backer, the father of three adults and grandfather to Merritt and Madison Baker. All are welcome at Rotary programs. If attending in-person at Ivy Tech Culinary and Conference Center reservations and prepayment are appreciated, but not required. Masks are required for those attending regardless of vaccination status. Register on Square at https://rotary-club-of-indianapolis.square.site/.
